BREAKING NEWS: A rapist whose presence for two weeks in west Donegal left a community in fear has left the county – and handed himself back to the PSNI.
Joseph McCabe, pictured in this PSNI photograph, was in breach of the conditions on his release from a 14-year sentence for the horrific rape of a 64-year-old woman.
He had been living in a caravan in Burtonport before being switched to a house in Dungloe.
It’s understood the publicity surrounding his whereabouts and his description led McCabe, 29, to fear for his safety.
Vigilantes had been patrolling Dungloe, vowing to protect local people.
Earlier today McCabe, who had grown a goatee-beard, drove to a police station in Derry gave himself up.
Local people in Burtonport are delighted.
“All the publicity on Donegal Daily and all the updates on his whereabouts as well as the patrols must have finally made him realise he couldn’t hide in our community any more,” said one local resident tonight.
McCabe had been driving around Donegal with Gardai monitoring his movements.
He was in Glenties on Sunday and was stopped by gardai in Letterkenny last week.
Violent criminal Casey Morgan, 18, is still on the run but is now believed to be in Dublin. He had been with McCabe in a caravan for the past two weeks.
