THE MAN killed in today’s road traffic accident on the Barnesmore Gap was a much-loved nurse from the Twin Towns.
Maximo Domens, who was 57, was originally from the Philippines. He was an Irish citizen and lived with his family in Stranorlar.
The head of the Garda traffic branch Michael Harrison today appealed for more witnesses to the crash to come forward.
Mr Domens’ silver Rover car was involved in a head-on collision with a bus.
But it has emerged that potential witnesses drove on after the crash at 8.30am.
“Unfortunately we have reports of some people moving debris from the road so that they could drive on,” Insp Harrison told Donegal Daily.
“Just two people have come forward and we know there were more people in the area at the time.
“We have to be able to tell Mr Domens’ family what happened and we need anyone who saw what happened to come forward as soon as possible.”
The accident happened on a on sweeping bend.
Insp Harrison said 17 people were on the bus and five were taken to hospital.
“Fortunately the bus driver was able to keep his vehicle on the road, otherwise this could have been a much more serious incident,” said Insp Harrison.
“The road was very busy at the time and we would appeal to witnesses to come forward.”
Mr Domens nursed in Laghey and was on his way home after a night shift.
“He was a brilliant guy,” said one nurse who knew him.
“We are just devastated at his death. He was loved by every patient who came into contact with him.”
The road re-opened at 4pm.
