The youngest ever candidate for the post of Mayor of Donegal Town has pulled out – because he is too young.DONEGAL TOWN

Rory Sweeney, who is 20 and from Lurganboy, withdrew his nomination this morning.

A press release issued this morning on behalf of Donegal Town Commnity Chamber said “In the matter of upcoming Mayoral Election, one of the candidates Rory Sweeney has withdrawn his nomination, due to his nomination not being in accordance with the rules and regulations pertaining to election.

“The candidates standing for election must be over 21 years.

“Mr Sweeney did not fulfil this criteria. It is regrettable that this situation arose.”

The chamber thanks Rory Sweeney for his interest in going forward for election.

Accordingly there will be no voting required to elect a Mayor and the remaining candidate Patricia Callaghan will be deemed elected on Friday Night May 24th and will be installed as Mayor in The Abbey Hotel at 8.30pm.
