THE lawyer representing Donegal bomb accused John Downey is a celebrated solicitor who worked tirelessly to clear the names of several high profile Irish men and women in Britain during the Troubles.
Gareth Peirce helped to clear the names of both the Guildford Four and the Birmingham Six – all Irish people framed by corrupt British police officers for crimes they didn’t commit.
During her career she also represented Judith Ward, a woman wrongfully convicted in 1974 of several IRA-related bombings and more recently worked for the family of Jean Charles de Menezes, shot dead by mistake by London police on a train.
Her role in the Guildford Four case was later portrayed in the movie ‘In The Name Of The Father’.
