It was the moment which signified their intention to remember a loved one lost through cancer.

The touching moment when a candle of remembrance and of hope lit up the Donegal landscape.Relay for Life Luminara Ceremony. Photo:- Clive Wasson

Hundreds if not thousands of such beacons of hope sat proudly on the football pitch at the Letterkenny Institute of Technology last night.

As the daylight faded on the opening day of the Relay for Life, people gathered in unity to show their determination to continue to fight this dreaded disease.

Arm-in-arm they marched around the pitch to show the fight if far from over.Relay for Life Luminara Ceremony. Photo:- Clive Wasson

They will continue to walk the walk until this evening by which time the second Donegal Relay for Life will have become another huge success.

Take a bow because one day all of you who participated today will say that you helped in your own small way to conquer cancer.
