For the fourth year in succession Aisteoiri Ghaoth Dobhair are delighted to be part of the Errigal Arts Festival.
But the company are more than putting themselves under a little pressure by staging no less than four different plays – in one night!
In 2010 they performed the comedy “Aintín Shearlais”, in An Grianan theatre, “Óiche Mhaith Agat a Mhic Uí Dhomhnaill” in 2011 and “Mo Thriuir Aingeal” in 2012.
This year they will perform a challenging four One Act Comedies in Aislann Rann a Feirste on Sunday the 14th of July.
One of a few Irish language theatre producers, Aisteoirí Ghaoth Dobhair was founded in 1931.
Its aim was to perform plays in the Irish language. Because of a lack of Irish language plays they wrote and translated plays to suit the Irish speaking audience. Their first performance was in Derrybeg Hall on the 10/01/1932. They travelled extensively with their productions, even as far as Scotland , in the years 1932 to 1961. Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair opened on the 03/09/1961 and the Aisteoirí produced many plays there over the years.
Following their acclaimed performances over recent years as part of the Earagail Arts Festival they are delighted to return with four one act comedies, reflecting life, love, marriage and death.
Written by Tomas Mac Giolla Bhrighde “Peadar ag an Doctiúir” tells the story of Peadar, a hypochondriac, who visits the doctors surgery. Thinking he has every ailment under the sun, how can he be cured? With an extremely high standard of acting by the Aisteoirí Óga, ( Eva Ní Dhoibhlinn, Jack O Gallchóir, Noel Mc Phaidín, Rosie Nic Gairbheith and Síle Ní Ghallchóir,) and produced by Pól Mac Cumhaill this play has scooped the Leaving Certificate section in the All Ireland Schools Drama Festival for Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair this year.
“Fear a phós Balbhán” tells the story of a man’s efforts to get his wife, who is dumb, to speak but sometimes things should be left as they are. It was written by Tomás Mac Anna and first performed in The Abbey Theatre in 1953. This play won the Junior Certificate section and was awarded the main prize of the Festival, (Scoth Léiriú na Féile) at this year’s All Ireland Schools Drama Festival for Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair. The adjudicator, Neasa Ní Laoire, said she was particularly impressed by the teamwork shown by the cast of three, Aisteoirí Óga; Owen Ó Fearraigh, Sorcha Ní Dhubhcháin and Joseph Ó Baoill. She praised them for their controlled acting and the energy in the production.
“An Cleamhnas” looks at how trying to arrange a marriage can go drastically wrong. It is a translation by Áine Nic Giolla Bhrighde of A Marriage Proposal (sometimes translated as simply The Proposal,) and is a one- act farce by Anton Chekhov, written in 1888-1889 and first performed in 1890. It is a fast-paced play of dialogue-based action and situational humour. , Séan Ó Gallchóir, Annelene Ní Fhearraigh and Pól Mac Cumhaill bring this comedy to life with superb acting and perfect timing.
“Tá sé, Níl sé” is a short one act farce, written and directed by Tomas Mac Giolla Bhrighde, where Feidhlimí has died but won’t admit he is dead. How can he be convinced? Come and see. This was performed for the first time in the Acadamh and was well received. With a cast of well known actors it should hopefully leave the audience satisfied with their nights entertainment. {Many of Aisteoirí Ghaoth Dobhair’s members have appeared on Tg4 over the years in programmes such as CU Burn, Gleann Ceo, FFC, Rós na Rún,, Rasaí na Gaillimhe, to name but a few. }
The plays are on in Aislann Rann na Feirste on Sunday the 14th of July at 8pm for one night only.
