Representatives from Donegal Golf Clubs were among 65 Fáilte Ireland quality assured golf courses from across the country given a key promotional platform to showcase what they have to offer, at the Irish Open in Carton House.

Indeed, Irish golf has taken the world by storm in recent years with our player’s success generating great interest in coming to the land where golf giants are made.

This flagship event provided an ideal opportunity for Donegal golf clubs such as the Ballyliffin Golf Club; Bundoran Golf Club and Donegal Golf Club to showcase what they have to offer for golf visitors in Donegal at the Golf Ireland stand, Carton House.

This is a key promotional platform and is regarded as an event highlight of the year for the golf industry.

Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Golf Tourism, Tony Lenehan  said “The quality assured golf clubs that are here today representing Donegal, take their golf standards seriously and to-date we have over 100 Irish golf courses boasting the Shamrock symbol North and South.

“This weekend at the Irish Open provided a wonderful advertising opportunity to showcase the two ingredients we are most famous for – our wonderful golf courses and our warm and friendly hospitality and people.

“Ireland has some fantastic golf courses but we want to be the best in the world. That’s why we have been working hard to raise standards even higher within the golf sector, thus ensuring that every single golfer who comes to Ireland has an outstanding experience. Golf is already an important part of the tourism industry, and there’s room to increase revenue further. We in Fáilte Ireland are working closely with the golf sector to build further on our success rate.”

The golf sector provides a total overseas spend of €202m for the Irish economy with 163,000 overseas visitors playing golf while in Ireland in 2012, each worth on average €1200 to the economy (two and a half times that of the average tourist).

Fáilte Ireland research shows that Ireland is hitting the mark on both satisfaction levels and value for money for our overseas guests – with satisfaction rates at 94% and value for money at 83%.
