The cowardly raid on the home of two elderly sisters in Raphoe is the  SIXTH such robbery in recent years.

Isa and Suzy Arthur were left terrified when three men broke into their home at 5pm on Monday afternoon and held them hostage.

Isa, 91, and Suzy, 89, were set upon by the gang who got away with a mall amount of cash and some personal items after the raid on the farmhouse at Feddy Glass just off the main Letterkenny to Lifford Road.

Suzy was thrown to the ground during the ordeal and suffered a suspected broke hip as a result.

Isa said she has not slept a wink since the ordeal.

The sisters’ nephew Joe McKean, a well-known dairy farmer from nearby Porthall in Lifford, said he is outraged by the attack on his two elderly aunts.

“I cannot think of words to call these men other than cowards. How could anybody do something like this to two elderly women?

“I am just sickened. These women have never harmed anyone in their lives, have worked hard and this is how they are repaid. It just makes my blood boil,” he said.

It has now been revealed that this is only the latest in a spate of attacks on the women.

The sisters used to breed turkeys but they were raided on at least two occasions just before Christmas on two occasions in recent years.

They also found a man upstairs in their house but he fled a number of years back while there were also two other attempts to rob their home.

The ladies are very well-known in the area and passers-by often stop to see their perfectly manicured lawns and flowers at their distinctive home.

Joe admitted he will have to review the security yet again on his aunts’ home.

“Perhaps because of how well the house is kept people think that Isa and Suzy are well-off but they are not.

“They keep the house spotless and love doing a bit of gardening but this is all they have.

“If these people only knew this then they would not have put these poor women through this ordeal.

“We are going to look at the security around the house again and we will probably look at putting in cameras for them,” he said.

Neighbour Ted Caldwell, who called in to see the ladies after the robbery yesterday said “A shotgun would be too good for these cowards.”

Gardai are continuing their investigations onto the raid and are believe a northern-registered silver Ford Focus car was involved in the raid.
