North West Words presents a weekend of readings, workshops, and discussion to suit writers of all levels in Letterkenny on the weekend of 19-21 July.

Poet Denise Blake will read at the weekend.

Poet Denise Blake will read at the weekend.

The weekend gets off to a start with a reading by local writers and facilitators including Denise Blake, Kathryn Daily, Malachy Doyle and Celine Mc Glynn at the launch event in Café Blend. There will be music on the night from Seoirse O Dochertaigh.

A variety of workshops designed to be useful to all writers take place in Gallagher’s Hotel on Saturday the 20th. A panel of publishers including Declan Meade of Stinging Fly Press, John Walsh and Lisa Frank of Doire Press and wordlegs’ editor ER Reapy will discuss issues in contemporary publishing on the Saturday afternoon.

Two readings are planned for Saturday evening, the first in Café Blend featuring local poet and playwright Deirdre Hines and BBC journalist and fiction writer, Freya Mc Clements. Music for this event will be from pianist Shay Halligan. Later on Saturday evening at Gallagher’s Hotel, Poet’s House director, Janice Fitzpatrick Simmons will be among the readers on a line up that also includes Gréagóir O’ Dúill, Lisa Frank and John Walsh. Music for this event is from guitarist Simon Mc Cafferty. These readings will include open mic.

The draw for an original painting by local artist Zara McDaid will take place at Saturday evening’s reading in Gallagher’s. Tickets will be available until that event. An exhibition of Zara’s paintings takes place in Cafe Blend throughout the weekend.

All readings are open to the public so please come along to enjoy some fine poetry and fiction in the company of some wonderful local musicians.

Sunday features master-classes in poetry and fiction for experienced writers. For descriptors of the workshops or to request a flyer please find North West Words on facebook, email maureenwcurran@yahoo.ie or write to NWW Writing Weekend, 54 Thornberry, Letterkenny.
