COUNCIL MAKES LITTER APPEAL AS SLOBS LEAVE TWO TONNES OF WASTE ON JUST ONE BEACH

rathmullan beach litterDONEGAL County Council today issued an impassioned appeal to people to end the littering which is ruining some of the county’s best beaches – reporting two tonnes of rubbish had to be picked up from one beach alone…in just one day!

With increasing reports of slobs dumping their waste along our strands, the council paid tribute to staff and local volunteers who have helped to clean up the mess left behind.

Tonnes of waste have been left on a daily basis, with readers complaining about incidents in Buncrana, Rathmullan and Rossnowlagh.

“Donegal County Council appeals to the public to act responsibly when visiting Donegal’s beaches during this spell of good weather,” said a council spokeswoman.

In order for everyone to be able to enjoy the beaches we ask that the public,

• take their litter home,

• if you are packing a picnic or bringing food etc to the beach please pack bags for your rubbish too and bring it home,

• when using facilities at the beach please ensure they are left clean and tidy and treat facilities with respect.

The spokeswoman added: “Over the recent hot spell Donegal County Council has increased the cleaning service provided at beaches.

“Clean-ups have taken place on a daily basis and at weekends through a combination of the Council’s own resources and in many cases with the support of the local community. We would like to acknowledge the support and assistance we receive from local communities at this busy time.

“With the hot weather set to continue the Council is calling on everyone visiting the county’s beaches to play their part, if everyone visiting the beach took their own waste home we would not have the situation whereby 2 tonnes of litter was collected on one beach earlier this week.

“The message is simple, we must all play our part and take responsibility to keep our beautiful beaches fantastic places for everyone to enjoy.”
