THIS was Donegal TD Padraig MacLochlainn visiting Cairo just last week.
Tonight some of those he met are dead or injured after 48 hours of bloodshed.
“I visited the huge Rabaa camp in Cairo, Egypt last week,” said Deputy MacLochlainn.
“I was there along with other Irish and British parliamentarians seeking to assist a peaceful settlement to the crisis.
“I am devastated and outraged at the slaughter at that camp today. They are peaceful protesters. Amongst them are Irish/ Egyptian citizens. Men, women and children. Tens of thousands.”
The UN Security Council is due to meet in a closed emergency session to discuss the violence in Egypt.
The move comes a day after least 638 people were killed when security forces broke up the camps of protesters allied to the Muslim Brotherhood.
The protesters had been staging sit-ins for weeks, demanding the reinstatement of President Mohammed Morsi, overthrown by the army in July.
