RED-faced Portugese police officials are insisting they have not launched a new investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann – but have now promised to help English police trace and interview more than 30 ‘persons of interest’ in the case.

No detectives involved in the original investigation into her disappearance on the Algarve in May 2007 will be taking part in the new probe.

The ‘persons of interest’ were named in a document put together by Scotland Yard as part of a review of the case.

With Maddie’s father Gerry having strong links to Donegal, there is considerable interest here in the case.

Madeleine visited the county with her family just weeks before she disappeared.

Recently a taxi driver in Portugal came forward to claim that he had told police he had seen Maddie with a couple in his taxi on the night of the disappearance.

He is among those who will now be interviewed properly.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, who is leading the UK police review of the case has said he believes Madeleine is still alive.
