A WELL-known Donegal restaurant was closed down by health chiefs over breaches of food hygiene regulations.

The Food Safety Authority said it ordered the closure of the kitchen at the Oyster Bar and Danaan’s restaurant in Dunfanaghy.

It said it served a closure notice on Anne Sweeney on August 2.

Restrictions were lifted a week later.

The health inspectors also served a closure notice on Pauline Lukaso of the Akatshi Grill, a food stall at Pier Car Park, Donegal Town.

The closure order in that case has been lifted.

Prof Alan Reilly, Chief Executive, FSAI expressed his disappointment at the lack of vigilance by some owners in ensuring their food businesses are fit for purpose and fully compliant with food safety legislation.

“The legal onus is on food businesses to ensure that the food they serve is safe to eat in accordance with the legislation.  There is absolutely no excuse for negligent practices,” said Prof. Reilly.

“Greater focus is required to ensure standards are not permitted to slip, thereby potentially putting the health of consumers at risk.

“Again and again, we encounter cases involving improper storage of foodstuffs and poor cleaning and sanitising.  These breaches are completely avoidable when food businesses have proper food safety management systems in place.”
