Exclusive: Frank McBrearty Jnr has quit the Labour Party, Donegal Daily can confirm.

Cllr Frank McBrearty has quit the Labour Party.

Cllr Frank McBrearty has quit the Labour Party.

The Raphoe-based county councillor and former Mayor of Donegal resigned from the party in recent days.

Cllr McBrearty admitted he had left the party when contacted but refused to make any further comment.

It is understood McBrearty has become completely disillusioned with politics and may not even stand again.

He was elected to Donegal County Council on the Labour Party ticket in 2009.

The often-outspoken councillor is expected to contact Mayor of Donegal Ian McGarvey before today’s meeting of Donegal County Council.

He will inform Mayor McGarvey that he is no longer a Labour Party councillor.

It is believed McBrearty was considering his position within the Labour Party even while Mayor of Donegal.

However, he did not want to leave the party as he did not want to deflect form his work as mayor.

His decision will be seen as a major blow to the Labour Party in Donegal.
