One of Donegal’s best known Gardai is considering standing for election to Donegal County Council.
Retired Sergeant Christy Galligan is known across the north-west for his no-nonsense style of policing.
Christy, known locally as Robocop, retired last year and set up Gallic Private Investigations.
Interestingly Galligan is the brother of Mary Harte, wife of Labour Senator Jimmy Harte who was also linked to run in the local elections this week.
Galligan, 53, confirmed to the Donegal Daily this morning that he is considering standing for the county council elections in the Letterkenny Electoral Area.
“I have been thinking about this for some time having been approached and spoken to a number of people about it.
“I have not completely decided but I am certainly giving it good consideration,” he said.
The Carrigart native said he would certainly stand as an Independent candidate if he does go forward for election next year.
“At present none of the political parties out there appeal to me so I will be standing as an Independent.
“I will be standing in the area of crime, security and public order because I think it is a very serious issue.
“But I also feel very strongly about job creation and I feel we must stand up for Donegal and for putting the necessary measures in place to provide jobs for Donegal and not just Dublin and its surrounding counties,” he said.
He said he understood there was going to be a certain amount of claims of nepotism in relation to his sister Mary standing for election.
However, he said he wished Mary good luck and that she was “very much her own woman.”
