Senator Jimmy Harte says he is delighted with the result in today’s Senate referendum.

And the Letterkenny politician used the occasion to attack Fine Gael and Sinn Fein for their stance towards the Senate.

“I’m personally delighted that the people have endorsed the Senate despite the erroneous campaign that certain people pushed.

“It could be the most expensive after dinner speech in history when Enda Kenny announced his intentions in 2009. In addition to that Sinn Fein brought the dessert to the meal and are now refusing to part their part of the bill.

“Suddenly they are trying to distance themselves from the result which is no surprise.

“The result is only democratic if we reform the senate and I look forward to that happening,” he said.

Although the Labour party campaigned for the abolition of the Senate, the party stance was left to to each individual politician to make up their own mind.

Senator Harte said he has always publicly called for the retention of the Senate.

He didn’t criticise his own party leader who campaigned with Sinn Fein and Fine Gael.
