Letterkenny Institute of Technology is hosting a Careers and Postgraduate Studies Fair on Monday, 21 October, in An Dánlann sports hall from 12 noon to 3 pm. Admission is free.
The fair offers a one-off opportunity to meet employers, review postgrad options and get plenty of free advice, all in one day and under one roof.
The Careers and Postgrad Fair is an unmissable event for anyone who wishes to find out about job opportunities across a various industry sectors and also to explore postgraduate study options.
A large number of national and local employers as well as, other colleges and voluntary organisations attend.
“It’s a wonderful chance to talk to potential employers, regardless whether you’ve recently graduated or not,” suggests organiser Catherine Lyster, Careers Officer at LYIT.
“The event is a valuable resource not just for job positions but also to get advice on securing employment or considering a career change.”
Catherine outlines what will be available. “We will be running free seminars from experts on topics like interview tips, studying abroad, how to dress to impress, as well as running our CV clinic with a panel of 5 experts. People can bring their CVs on the day and get free one-to-one guidance. Of course, we’ll have the Jobs Wall with current jobs listed. Many professional bodies are coming too such as Engineers Ireland and the Accountancy bodies.”
Over 50 local and national organisations will attend from the IT, Food, Business and Science sectors. Some well- known companies taking part include: Pramerica, Allergan, Allstate Northern Ireland, Ecoventi NI, United Health, specialist recruitment agencies and many more. Smaller businesses looking to recruit top quality staff for permanent, temporary and part-time opportunities will be there too such as, Safetech based in Letterkenny. For those thinking about setting up a business, government agencies will be there and the Donegal Business Boot Camp for young people (18-25) with big business ideas.
Referring to the mix of exhibitors this year Catherine says, “I believe there is definitely more optimism, we’re seeing a wider spread of employers who are actively recruiting in areas such as, IT, renewable energy, food sectors, medical and agriculture. This event offers people the chance to talk directly to potential employers, professional bodies and to postgraduate education providers. Anyone who is looking to find employment, change career or is considering further study should definitely come along. All are welcome.”
For those considering postgraduate study, representatives from prominent universities and colleges throughout Ireland will be attending to offer advice on their range of postgraduate study options.
In addition to full-time study, many courses can now be completed on a part-time or distance learning basis. Universities taking part include Queens, University of Ulster, as well as universities from the UK and Ireland
Some of the professional associations attending include Engineers Ireland, the accountancy bodies in Ireland and Nursing Careers, as well as voluntary organisations such as The Donegal Volunteer Centre. Voluntary work is a useful way for job seekers to develop valuable skills and many well known voluntary associations will be there.
The free seminars line up is as follows: 10.30 – 11.30 am: Careers in Accountancy, and Applying to Postgraduate Teaching Courses in UK; 12 – 12.45 pm: Issues You Need to Consider if you Intend Working Abroad; 12.45 – 1.30 pm: How to Make an Effective Presentation – Essential Tips for Interviews and Presentations; 1.30 – 2.15 pm: Using LinkedIn in your Job Search; and 2.15 – 3 pm: Dress to Impress for Success.
