Buncrana town councillor Ciaran McLaughlin has said the government cannot shift blame for the property tax debacle onto the revenue commissioners.Cllr Ciaran McLaughlin

After Revenue Commissioner Josephine Feehily answered TDs’ questions on the property tax, Mc Laughlin said Ms Feehily quite rightly pointed out the limitations Revenue faces in implementing this tax on family homes.

“The government rushed through this legislation because it knew it was unpopular and unfair. They cannot now shift the blame onto revenue for their rushed legislation.

“Sinn Féin remains opposed to the tax and will repeal it in government. In friday’s committee labour and fine gael TDs tried to pass the buck on this shambles and take ownership of the problem and refused to take responsibility for the mess. This charade will not fool the tens of thousands who will struggle to pay this unfair tax now or next year.

“This is a tax proposed by fianna fail and implemented by the labour party and fine gael.No amount of shifting blame onto civil servants can hide that fact . The government must take full responsibility and repeal the property tax.”
