BREAKING NEWS: A man has died in a freak accident in Rathmullan.

The man, named locally as Dan Joe Gallagher, 86, was mooring his boat when he slipped and fell at the pier.

The accident happened just after 10.30pm last night.

The man, who was from the Killycolman area of the town, was well know in the area as a local character and musician.

He worked in England for many years in the construction industry.

The emergency services rushed to the scene but it is understood the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

His remains have been taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where a post mortem is expected to be carried out.

A full investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The man, who was not married, was well-known and in the area and very well respected.

Residents of the tightly-knit seaside village are in shock at the tragedy.
