Computer scams targeting the bank details of people have reached epidemic proportions across Co Donegal.

Dozens of householders are now being telephoned by scammers on a daily basis claiming there are problems with their computers.

The gangsters have access to people’s computers and can see where people are logging on.

They then ask people for their bank details so their can “upgrade” their computer software.

Local Inishowen councillor Ciaran McLaughlin said he is meeting people on a daily basis who are receiving phonecalls from the fraudsters.

“Some Buncrana residents have contacted me over the last few days, voicing their concerns and annoyance at the volume of e-mails and phone calls from these rouge criminals.

The Sinn Fein Cllr added “As we approach Christmas, these scammers will step up their intense campaign to trick and fool you into believing that you do have a problem with your windows 7 or your bank account is not correct.

“Be very wary of phone calls and e mails from strangers and never give your bank details out, stay smart and keep vigilant, ignore these scams,” he said.

Another email scam is freezing people’s computers unless they make a payment to unlock it.
