The 55 year old, who had been in the unit at Beaumont Hospital since Saturday week last, has been moved to the high dependency unit.

He is off the ventilator, breathing on his own and is speaking a little to his family.

A family spokesman said Jimmy has made remarkable recovery in recent days but was still in a delicate condition.

“Jimmy still has a long way to go but the signs a positive that he is getting stronger all the time.

“He will be a long time in hospital but the fact that he is talking and has been awake and breathing without the aid of a ventilator are all great signs.

“It has been so worrying for all of us but hopefully Jimmy can go on form here and make a full recovery,” said a family member.

Well-wishes have been flooding in for the popular father-of-four since he was found unconscious on a Dublin street close to his apartment.

It is suspected that Jimmy suffered a blackout and fell banging his head which led to a serious head injury.
