Donegal County Council has shown they mean business against illegal dumpers.

Yesterday a Donegal Daily reader sent in pictures of an illegal dump site in a stream in Drumkeen.

The culvert, located close to the Letterkenny/Convoy junction, was filled with hundreds of empty bottles and bags of rubbish.

The shocking pictures resulted in an immediate response from the council who yesterday completed a full clean-up of the area.

A spokesman for the council said they will continue to monitor the site and investigate who was responsible for the dumping.

“Donegal County Council would like to thank Donegal Daily for highlighting this illegal dumping which is without a doubt a blight on some of the most beautiful parts of our county.

“This site was cleared today by Council staff and will be closely monitored over the coming months. We are also collecting evidence which will hopefully identify those responsible for this dumping and we will be pursuing this matter as far as possible.

“Disposing of waste in this way is illegal and anyone caught doing this could face prosecution including a substantial fine and a custodial sentence,” said a spokesperson.

The council also thank the public for their vigilance in reporting this activity and ask them to continue to do this by contacting Donegal County Council on (00 353) 74 91 53900 or by email at environment@donegalcoco.ie .

“Once again, we thank you and your readers for your support in our efforts to combat this illegal activity.”
