OPEN SEASON FOR CRIMINALS AS JUSTICE MINISTER SNUBS DONEGAL

Deputy Charlie McConalogue has slammed the news that NO new Gardai will be coming to Co Donegal despite the recent spate of criminality.

No new Gardai will be coming to Donegal.

No new Gardai will be coming to Donegal.

The Dail was told that there are currently 412 Gardai and 29 Garda Reserves serving the entire county.

But Deputy McConalogue says this is down from 466 in recent years.

And the Fianna Fail TD said once again that Donegal is a special case because of its close proximity to the border.

“The Minister for Justice is just not listening to the fact that Donegal is a special case and recent weeks has shown that once again.

“The Minister says that he will continue with intelligence-led operations ro combat crime but that is only one aspect of policing.

“The bottom line remains that there is no greater deterrent to criminals than to see Gardai on the street.

“The reality is that numbers for Gardai in Donegal have reduced from 466 to 412 which is around a 12% reduction.

“That is sending out all the worng messages to criminals that they can just use the border areas to come and go.

“We have seen evidence of this in recent weeks with incidents along the border,” he said.
