hailGARDAI have issued an urgent warning to motorists in Co Donegal after ice, hail and snow on higher ground caused problems on the roads this morning.

Heavy snow is now affecting many areas.

A spokesman with AA Ireland said: “Minor roads are particularly bad, especially in the Letterkenny area.”

Long tailbacks at Mountain Top and on the Ramelton to Letterkenny road were a direct result of the wintry weather.

Four schools have been closed in Ballyshannon and Dunfanaghy with PCC Falcarragh will open at 10.30am.

More than 3,000 homes are also still without power.

Creeslough has 2,100 customers without power, said the ESB.

Crews worked throughout the night to re-connect up to 12,000 homes. Around 3,000 customers are still without power.

Met Eireann has issued a YELLOW ALERT until 10pm tonight – with gusts of wind up to 110km/hr possible.

The forecaster says it will very cold tonight with icy stretches on roads – with more gale force winds on Friday.
