THERE were emotional scenes today at the funeral of Donegal native Marie Fleming, the multiple sclerosis suffer who had campaigned for the right to die at a time of her choosing.

Ms Fleming passed away last week, months after losing her legal bid to change the law here.

But her partner Tom Curran told mourners at her funeral in Avoca, Co Wicklow, that Marie loved life.

He said she was a unique, beautiful person who “had strength and determination beyond belief.”

Mr Curran said caring for his partner for the last two decades was the most important thing he ever did in his life.

She is survived by her children Corinna and Simon and stepson David, as well as two brothers, a sister and grandchildren.

Corinna read a letter that her mother had written for the service.

In the letter Marie thanked her legal team, saying it was better to have tried and failed then not to have tried at all.

In a message for Tom, she had written: “Thank you for loving me, caring for me.”
