A young Dungloe girl with a rare skin disorder is to appear on RTE’s Nationwide.

Little Lucy is still making great strides.

Little Lucy is still making great strides.

Lucy Gallagher was born in August 2012 with one of the rarest and potentially life threatening genetic skin disorders “Harlequin Ichthyosis”.

She is the only child in Ireland to have this disorder and one of about 100 in the world.

Nationwide heard about her and her struggle for survival, the dedication of her parents Gary and Carleen through the publication of a book ‘Heroes in the Classroom.’

The book is about how people have been inspired by a teacher at some point in their lives – often so much so that it has stayed with them all their life. It’s really well done and heart warming to read.

Although it started out as a transition year project at The Rosses Community School in Dungloe where Lucy’s mum teaches, the pupils felt it would be a great way to raise funds for Lucy.

Daniel O’Donnell and GAA star Michael Murphy will as celebrity contributors on the show.

The programme will be transmitted on Nationwide Mon 13th Jan at 7pm RTE One.
