Rodney Tighe, 35, had been the designated driver while they were attending a wedding at the Radisson Hotel in the town.

However he fell out with his friends and decided to drive.

A Garda told Letterkenny District Court that on September 21st last at 2.30am they were on patrol on Pearse Road.

They noticed a man taking off at the lights and then he suddenly crashed into an island.

He was taken to Letterkenny Garda station and failed a breath test.

A taxi-driver also approached Gardai after the crash and said he had witnessed Tighe of 30 Melmount Road, Strabane, driving on the wrong side of the road at Neil T Blaney Road before doing a u-turn.

Gardai said 35 year old Tighe was very co-operative when he was brought to the Garda station.

The court heard he was a single man with a four year old daughter who earned £70 a week.

He was unemployed but had worked as a chef.

The court heard that €180 worth of damage had been caused to the roundabout and that Tighe had the money to pay for it in court.

Judge Paul Kelly fined Tighe €200 and ordered the money go to the local council and also fined him a further €100 and banned him fro driving for two years on the drink-driving charge.
