Fianna Fáil Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has welcomed the Government’s u-turn on the Irish Embassy in the Vatican City.

Senator Ó Domhnaill commented, “I’m glad that the Labour Party has been forced into this u-turn. The reasons given for closing the embassy in the first instance were completely bogus and it was a mistake.”

“At the time we pointed out the diplomatic value of having representation at the Holy See and the networking influence it gave us. But the Labour Party knew best and pressed ahead with their populist agenda.”

“Like so much with this Government, the primary consideration is PR and spin. They closed the Vatican Embassy when they thought it would be popular and now they are re-opening it when they think it might be popular. It is no way to run a diplomatic service and I only hope they have learned from the mistake.”
