THERE’S chaos on one of Donegal’s main routes tonight.

Traffic on the N15 at McGrory’s Brae – between the Twin Towns and Donegal Town – has ground to a halt as cars have become stuck in the snow.

There are massive tailbacks in both directions with hundreds and hundreds of cars stuck in the jam.

Prison vans returning inmates from Letterkenny court today to Castlerea Prison are amongst the vehicles stuck in the ice.

Gardaí are on their way to the scene.

“It just takes one or two motorists to become stuck in the ice and snow and that’s the journey home wrecked,” said one motorist via email from the scene.

Another complained: “There are massive tailbacks. Where are all the gritters?”

There were dozens of minor accidents across the county today due to the snow.

Some cars have been abandoned just outside Dunlewey as blizzards hit the area.

And there was only a few centimetres of snow today.

Met Eireann’s Orange snow alert for Donegal runs out this evening, but with temperatures dropping below 0C, many roads are now covered in ice.
