The man who sparked a fightback against burglars in Donegal has said he hopes the campaign will continue to grow across the county after saying his work is done.
Tony Morning has said other groups will take over and he hopes elderly people can rest a little safer in their homes.
The businessman spoke to Donegal Daily after a meeting at the Manor Resource Centre resulted in the setting up of nine different Text Alert and Neighbourhood Watch Schemes in the Manor and surrounding areas.
Mr Morning said he would not like to comment on the fact that there has been a drastic reduction in burglaries in the area since he organised the first meeting of outraged locals.
He said “I can say it is the most satisfying thing I have ever been involved in. The reaction of the community in getting behind the elderly and the vulnerable was terrific.
“I don’t think I can do any more but I think there is a great network now set-up.
“The fact that more than 1,500 people turned up at a meeting and wanted to help showed the true community spirit that still exists in Donegal.
“I know we can’t take our eye off the ball now but I am hoping these nine groups will continue to protect the people of our areas.
“We will continue to call in on our elderly neighbours and the text alert schemes will keep that communication between people,” he said.
Mr Morning said it was impossible to thank everyone involved in helping secure the homes of elderly people in the area.
He thanked Orbit and Brimac Security for providing alarms at cost, Gerard Brogan and Hugh Sweeney for the sensor lights, Frank Morning for fitting locks and chains which were supplied by Drumoghill Football Club.
He also thanked Manor Resource Centre, the Gardai and especially the senior citizens who were robbed and who spoke out.
“It took a lot for these people to get up on that stage and tell their story.
“They had to relive what they went through and that wasn’t easy,” he said.
