‘BEST IN WORLD’ AMBULANCE BOSS SHOULD BE FIRED, SAYS DONEGAL MAN

THE man who runs the National Ambulance Service needs to resign or be fired, a grieving Donegal man said today.

NAS boss Martin Dunne has been ridiculed after he told RTE’s Prime Time his service was ‘the best in the world’.

Mr Dunne said everything about the service was world-leading – including ‘the best uniforms in the world’.

The comments have sparked outrage – set against RTE statistics which showed how people were dying because cash-starved ambulance crews were unable to get to incidents on time.

Brendan Porter, whose mother Maura died last December after waiting 50 minutes for an ambulance in Carndonagh, today called on Martin Dunne to go.

“He’s completely delusional,” said Brendan.

“He should resign for those comments and if he doesn’t resign then he should be fired. Simple as that.”

Maura was struck by a car as she walked home from chapel in Carn.

Her son, daughter and husband spent an agonising 50 minutes waiting for an ambulance to arrive. Maura later died that night at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry.

The Porters believe Maura may have survived if the ambulance had arrived sooner.

The union representing ambulance crews has also hit out at Mr Dunne, saying his comments were ill-judged and called for a massive increase in resources for under-pressure crews.
