TWITTER USERS TO TAKE TO NEW HEIGHTS UP ERRIGAL

Autism Awareness across Donegal will be taken to new heights this weekend!

Errigal.

Errigal.

A group of Twitter users from Donegal – and some from further afield – join with other eager climbers for the Donegal Autism Family to turn Mount Errigal blue at the third annual Mount Errigal Tweet-up.

The charity tweet-up is also aiming to help Donegal Mountain Rescue and for the third year in succession, also plans to assist the Little Angels School by collecting old mobile phones for the school at their base camp on on the day.

One of the organisers of the first climb, Carl Diver explained that the initial idea came from a chance comment, but after a hugely successful first and second climb, the third was never really in doubt.

This year’s Tweet-Up had however been pencilled in for a different day, but once the local twitter followers became aware of the plans to raise Autism Awareness this weekend, they decided to see if they could join in and perhaps swell the numbers in the process.

Clare McCahill who is helping organise this year’s tweet-up said the organisers of ‘Turn Donegal Blue for Autism Awareness’ were only too glad to have the Tweet-Up climbers as part of their campaign.

“The climb has always been tied in with charity so this was a perfect opportunity to tie in with a group who were also climbing Errigal as part of their activities,” Clare said.

She explained that the Donegal Autism Family Support Group are hoping to turn Errigal blue and highlight autism awareness and an aerial photo is planned so we are really hoping for a great turn out and we are asking people to wear blue on the day or to buy an autism awareness t-shirt at the event.

Liam Porter who has also helped promote the Tweet-Up over the past three years added that the climbers would also be seeking to assist other local groups.

“We will, as we have in previous years, also be collecting old phones for the Little Angels school in Letterkenny while this year we will also be supporting Donegal Mountain Rescue who need to raise funds to replace two of their emergency response vehicles.”

Climbers are due to meet at the car park at the foot of Errigal at 11am on Sunday morning and are asked to remember their blue clothing for the aerial photograph.

You can follow the climb on Twitter @errigaltweetup and with the hashtag #errigaltweetup and you can also find out more about the climb by joining the Errigal Tweet-up open group on Facebook.
