Shay Given, former Irish goalkeeping legend, says charities such as Relay for Life Donegal make him “proud to be from Donegal”.
The Lifford native says “Relay for Life Donegal is an inspirational charity that over the past two years has raised €708,000 through their Relay for Life Donegal 24 hour fundraisers”.
According to Shay, “Relay for Life Donegal helps to ensure Donegal isn’t the forgotten County when it comes to cancer care service provision. 2013 seen Relay for Life Donegal raise an incredible €320,728 for vital cancer research.”
In addition to this The Irish Cancer Society spent €328,225 on vital cancer services in Donegal.
Shay explains that “the funding obtained has assisted The Irish Cancer Society in providing vital services such as care to drive; a free transport service whereby trained volunteer drivers transport cancer patients to and from their hospital treatments, nursing services; whereby night care is received by cancer patients in their own home during the final days of their life, financial aid and helpline calls to name a few”.
However Shay highlights that Relay for Life Donegal is much, much more than a fundraising event.
He emphasises that “the Relay for Life Donegal committee place a great deal of significance on raising awareness of cancer and the support and help that is available to those who require it”.
As a result of this shay is “overwhelmed and delighted to inform the public that the Relay for Life Donegal committee have organised a cancer conference that will be held at the Mount Errigal, Hotel, Letterkenny on Saturday the 5th April 2014 from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free and lunch is included.”
Siobhan Diver, Marketing Manager, the conference “Living beyond cancer – supporting cancer survivors and their caregivers” is a unique conference that has been organised to cater for survivors, carers and interested parties.
“Our key speakers, who have a wealth of experience and knowledge, will discuss a wide range of topics which will be highly relevant and of great benefit and interest to all who attend”.
“An integral part of the conference will be the specialised sessions: Men and Cancer; Women and Cancer; Carers Caring for a Loved one with Cancer and Childhood Cancer-A Child Changed, A Family Changed.”
According to Shay with this conference being “FOR YOU, BECAUSE OF YOU, THANKS TO YOU”; it is simply way too good of an opportunity to miss”.
As registrations aren’t being held on the day of the conference shay urges anyone interested in attending to telephone one of the following today; Ena at 087 9966096, Mags at 087 6865828, Laura at 086 3517202 or Robert at 087 2716344 or alternatively email relayforlifedonegal@gmail.com.
