HEALTH Minister James Reilly has given the go-ahead for the appointment of a paediatric diabetes nurse for 140 patients here in Co Donegal.
The victory for campaigners came after a meeting arranged in Dublin today between Joe McHugh TD and Dr Reilly and representatives of the local campaign group.
Local Fine Gael election candidate Grace Boyle however says the campaign should not end there – and wants a centre of excellence in the North West.
This could be linked to the NHS in Derry.
A Clinical Nurse Specialist for children with type 1 diabetes will be based in Letterkenny General Hospital.
Grace Boyle said that this is service is absolutely essential for the people of Donegal. She said that the next step is to progress the plan to create a Regional Centre of Excellence to enable pump therapy to be available for children in Donegal. At the moment, children in Donegal have to travel to Dublin for this therapy.
