DONEGAL GP CARE IN CRISIS, MEETING TOLD

Thomas PringleGP care in Donegal is in crisis, a meeting has heard, due to funding cuts by the Department of Health.

Speaking at a meeting with North West GPs in Donegal Town, Deputy Thomas Pringle paid tribute to the GPs for calling the meeting to outline the crisis in general practice across the country.

“The fact that funding for general practice has been cut by thirty-eight per cent since 2009 has put it into this crisis; we cannot continue to cut funding for services and expect them to deliver more,” said Deputy Pringle.

“Ninety-four per cent of contact with doctors in Ireland takes place in general practice and it needs immediate funding to continue patient safety and outcomes.

“The meeting sent a clear message that there will be no contract for under 6’s without negotiation with GPs and I am calling on the Minister for Primary Care Alex White to rebuild trust immediately with GPs and the Irish Medical Organisation,” stated Pringle.
