A local election candidate has encouraged people to get behind the annual National Spring Clean campaign that has got under way for the entire month of April.

James Pat Mc Daid has said that this campaign empowers local communities to come together to clean up their local area.

“Whilst I don’t believe that the locals do the littering, the locals must look at it on a daily basis and live with the consequences. In Donegal we have some beautiful scenery, only for it to be ruined in certain circumstances, by thoughtless littering and rubbishing.

“Donegal also has as many walkers, runners and cyclists on its roadways and these people see at first hand the littering that goes on. We can improve our image by ensuring that they do not have to pass discarded bottles, plastic bags or paper wrappers on a regular basis,” he said.

James Pat complimented the communities that have already taken up the task of cleaning up their area and additionally, those communities that plan to do so in the future.

‘The national spring clean is funded by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. In this month of April it is important that litter along our roadways is lifted before the growth comes to cover it up, only for it to reappear next year again. Local areas can register their clean up event online and receive bags, gloves and other equipment on the following website http://www.nationalspringclean.org/.

“Some areas around the county are already doing this which is great to see. The towns and villages of Ireland do great work as part of their participation in the National Tidy Towns competition.

“Wouldn’t it be great to see this extended in some way to a tidy townlands competition too, whereby local areas can get credit for the good work they are doing in maintaining the attractiveness of their surroundings,” he added.
