With just two weeks to go now to the 18th North West 10k charity road race and walk the momentum is building rapidly for an event that has been attracting an average of 3,000 participants in recent years.

The organizing committee is encouraging as many people as possible to either enter on-line or at the 10k office based at Letterkenny Community Centre, which opens on Tuesday evening, April 29th.

The charity race and walk, which is once again being sponsored by the DonegalDaily.com and Brian McCormick Sports & Leisure has raised over €650,000 for 19 charities since 1997.

The two benefiting charities this year are the Letterkenny Branch of the Dyslexia Association of Ireland and the Conwal Parish Church Restoration Committee.

Dyslexia Association Chairperson Mick Lagan says his members are delighted to have been selected to be one of the two main beneficiaries from this year’s event. The organization has been an ‘associate charity’ of the 10k for past four years.

The local Dyslexia branch has been existence for 19 years and provides professional tuition to help children with reading and writing. Currently they have 45 pupils on their books at night classes in the LYIT funded fully by voluntary contributions. It costs around €40,000 a year to keep the teaching service going.

The Conwal Parish Church Committee has to raise over €100,000 which will go towards essential works on the restoration of the tower and spire at the Church which is located opposite St. Eunan’s Cathedral. The two main charities have been working closely on range of fundraising initiatives over past month to maximize their revenue return from the North West 10k.

Chairperson James Boyle has again emphasized that ensuring safety is first and foremost in the minds of the organizers when it comes to hosting an event that attracts on average of 3,000 participants annually. With that key objective in mind the expertise of Council engineer Charlie Kerr has been central to the development of a comprehensive road safety statement and traffic management plan which has been updated again for this year’s charity race and walk. Sponsorship cards to raise funds for the 10k charities are available by dropping in to the Letterkenny Chamber, Grand Central Complex, Canal Road or ring 9124866 for more details.
