THE HEAD of the Garda Traffic Corps in County Donegal says he is ‘happier’ with safer driving on our roads, but warned: “Our operations are continuing.”

Inspector Michael Harrison was speaking as he revealed that all 368 people breath-tested at mandatory checkpoints in Donegal over the weekend passed the tests.

However four other motorists were separately caught drinking and driving by other Gardaí on patrol in the county.

The number of people caught drinking and driving in the three months until the end of March in Donegal was up 6.4% on the same three months of 2013.

Inspector Harrison said he was ‘happier’ with the safer driving over the Easter weekend with no fatal or serious injury road collisions.

Gardaí attended the scene of just three traffic accidents. No-one was seriously hurt in any of them.

A number of people were caught driving whilst using mobile phones.

“We didn’t have any loss of life or serious injury over the bank holiday weekend and I am always happy when this is the case, especially with the good weather and the increased traffic volumes,” Insp Harrison said today.

“We are hoping that the message on drinking and driving is getting through, with everyone stopped during the special operation in Donegal Town giving clear results from breath tests.

“I am mindful that the number of people detected drinking and driving is up on last year and four motorists were arrested since last Friday for suspected drink-driving.

“Our operations involving both traffic corps gardaí and regular gardaí are continuing across Donegal this week.

“I want to thank all those who have been driving safely and urge them to continue to do so during the rest of Easter and on into the future. I’m happier with what we have seen this weekend but we will continue our work to make Donegal’s roads safer for everyone who uses them.”
