Derry City Reserves travelled to Fanad on Sunday for a backlogged League Cup game and came away with the win that moves them to the top of Group B along with Knockalla Cup finalists, Letterkenny Rovers. Both teams will like their chances of advancing to the semi-finals and the games between the two are likely to decide who will enjoy home advantage at the semi-final stage.

Derry Join Rovers at Top of Group B

Fanad Utd.

Derry City Res.

These two young sides served up an entertaining game played in damp but calm conditions at Traigh-a-Loch. From the start both teams tried to get the ball on the ground and play decent football. Fanad could have taken the lead in the 4th minute when Daire McDaid rose highest in the Derry box from a Brian McVeigh corner, only to see his header drift wide. Derry settled after that scare and had two chances in the space of a minute to take the lead. On 13 minutes, a free kick from Dylan McCallion was headed over by Conor Barr and a minute later Conor Kelly struck the bar from 20 yards after a defensive mix up. In the 18th minute Ryan Doherty’s shot from the edge of the box was well saved by Fanad keeper Jordan McBride. Fanad continued to probe and in the 25th minute Brian McVeigh’s shot was saved at the 2nd attempt by Conor McDermott. Derry’s pressure paid off in the 38th minute when the always dangerous George Kelly met Aiden McCauley’s corner and placed his header into the top corner. In the 50th minute Derry almost increased their lead in identical circumstances, but this time Kelly headed his chance over the bar. Derry did however increase their lead in the 65th minute. Substitute Rory Holden was on only a matter of minutes when his shot from the edge of the D took a slight deflection and flew into the top corner. 10 minutes later it took two excellent blocks from Fanad centre half Glenn McNulty in the space of a minute to stop Derry increasing their lead. Derry had one final chance in the 82nd minute when sub Ciaron Harkin’s cross was headed wide by George Kelly. Best for Fanad were Glenn McNulty, Brian McVeigh and Kevin Murray. Best for Derry were Caolan McLaughlin, Aidan McCauley and Georgie Kelly.
