Letterkenny Mayor Paschal Blake pointing the way to entries for this year’s North West 10K which starts at 2pm.

Final entries for the DonegalDaily.com and Brian McCormick Sports & Leisure sponsored charity run and walk will be taken up to 1 p.m.

Donegal ‘Person of the Year’ Liam O Ó Cuinneagáin who will get the runners underway from the start line at the Pearse Road beside the Community Centre. The Mayor of Donegal Cllr Ian McGarvey has accepted the invitation to start the walkers who will leave from the Community Centre car park just after the runners have departed.

All participants are reminded to be at Letterkenny Community Centre by 1 p.m. at the latest as traffic restrictions will be in place from that time. A traffic management plan is in place for the 10k so the Gardai and the committee are asking the motorists not involved in the charity event to leave a bit of extra time for their journey in and around Letterkenny from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. this afternoon.

The two main charities who will benefit from Sunday’s event are the Letterkenny Branch of the Dyslexia Association of Ireland and the Conwal Parish Church Restoration Fund. A number of other associated charities will also benefit by their involvement with the 10k.

It is a primarily a family fun day out catering for all ages groups and fitness levels. However, there is a serious side to it for the elite runners and there are two separate €500 for the first male and female to break the course records. The men’s record is held by Noel Berkely of 29.14 set in 1998 while the women’s best time ever was 32.34 recorded by Maria McCambridge set in 2005.

Last year’s North West winner Keith Shields’s time was 32.15 just over three minutes outside the record. And Maria McCambridge who won the women’s section last year in a time of 35.39 was also just over three minute outside the record she set in 2005.

Traffic Restrictions in Letterkenny

With the North West 10k taking place on next Sunday May 4th in Letterkenny there will be a traffic management plan in place. The 10k committee wishes to inform motorists and the general public of the following restrictions in Letterkenny.

1:20pm until 2:20pm Paddy Harte Road will be down to 1 lane only. There will be no right turn permitted from Paddy Harte Road onto Pearse Road.

1:30pm until 2:30pm Port Road will be one way only from Station Roundabout outbound to Port Bridge Roundabout

1:45pm until 3:00pm Pearse Road from McDonalds to Reid’s Garage corner will be down to 1 lane only.

2:00pm until 2:40pm DeVelera Road – traffic will not be permitted down DeVelera Road

Ramelton Road will be one way only from Oatfield Roundabout to Station Roundabout

Other measures will also be in place to ensure the safety of participants and to keep traffic moving as freely as possible. Temporary stoppages might be experienced from 2:00pm until 3:00pm where a bulk of participants may be crossing a junction. Motorists are advised to follow alternate route signage if possible. The North West 10k committee apologises for any inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience shown by motorists. If in doubt follow the instructions of the Gardaí or stewards who are on hand to be of assistance. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.
