GARDAÍ and mountain rescue experts have taken part in a major search operation following reports that a man was hit by a vehicle and then disappeared.
A motorist reported striking someone in Leitirmacaward in the early hours of yesterday.
The lorry’s driver stopped at the scene and immediately reported the incident to Gardaí.
Slight damage was caused to his vehicle but the man who was injured left the scene.
Officers arrived at the road and also began a search but could find no trace of anyone.
“The motorist was adamant that he believed he had struck somebody at the side of the road and he did the right thing, stopped and went to help but the person who had been struck had left,” said one local man.
“Gardaí were called to the scene and they couldn’t find anyone either.”
Fire service crews also joined the all-night search.
At dawn yesterday Donegal Mountain Rescue Team also joined the search efforts amid fears someone had been seriously hurt and may need assistance.
“No trace of the man has been found as of yet,” said a DMRT spokesman.
