Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice Pádraig MacLochlainn TD has called on the Government to make time for a debate in the Dáil on the Guerin report this week.
Deputy MacLochlainn wrote to the Ceann Comhairle on Friday, 9th May, to make his request for the Dáil to debate the Guerin report which was published on the same day.
The Donegal Deputy said “The Guerin report clearly vindicated Sergeant Maurice McCabe and highlighted huge problems at the heart of An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice.
“The people of Ireland have been understandably shocked by the findings in the report and it is a matter of national importance that should be debated in the Dáil this week.”
Deputy MacLochlainn requested that the Secretary General of the Justice Department, Brian Purcell, appear before the Oireachtas Justice Committee this week to answer questions on the Guerin report.
He said “It remains to be seen whether the Secretary General will accept the invitation from our Committee but we are hopeful that he will do the right thing and appear before us. As the most senior civil servant in the Justice Department, he needs to answer questions and clear up serious matters raised in the Guerin report. This too is a matter of national importance.”
