Donegal have advanced to the semi-final of the Ulster MFC following a hard fought victory over local rivals Derry at Celtic Park.

Donegal have goalkeeper Danny Rodgers to thank, after the Dungloe man pulled off three crucial saves in the second-half.

Derry who were out of sorts in the first-half, sprung to live after the interval, and made it a real contest.

Donegal were hugely impressive in the opening half hour, and dominated proceedings right from the off.

A goal from Jamie Brennan, put daylight between the sides, as Derry toiled to keep up with a rampant Donegal side, that at one point, looked set to steamroll their local rivals.

Derry plugged away and stayed in contention with a couple of late scores in the first-half and kept in touch with Donegal.

However, the second-half was a completely different affair, with Derry upping the ante right from the start.

Danny Rodgers made three fantastic stops and that kept Derry at bay.

Derry kept chipping away at the scoreboard, but just couldn’t find a way past the inspired Rodgers to get that crucial goal.

The Dungloe man comes from good stock, his cousin Donal Rodgers is a former Donegal Minor and Vocational schools goalkeeper.

However, with just five minutes to go, Derry trailed by just two points.

Donegal had only scored 1 point in the second-half with just five minutes to go, but Gavin McBride scored with a super free to ease Donegal nerves.

Stephen McBrearty added another couple of scores to settle the game, and see Donegal advance to an Ulster MFC semi-final.

Declan Bonner will be delighted to get the win, and will be very happy with the first-half performance.

However, he’ll be acutely aware, his side rode their luck for large parts of the second-half and will no they’ll need to improve again to advance.
