Pat the Cope Gallagher has lost his seat

PAT The Cope Gallagher has conceded defeat in the European elections.

Marian Harkin retains her seat as an MEP.

She was declared the winner of the fourth seat after a recheck of ballot papers, which ended at 4am.

The final declaration came almost five days after proceedings began in Castlebar.

As a recheck of ballot papers continued through the night, no major discrepancies were identified in hundreds of bundles of votes.

Afterwards The Cope called into question his party’s two-candidate strategy in the sprawling constituency.

Had just one Fianna Fail candidate stood, he would have taken a seat.
