Donegal U12 schoolboys got their Foyle Cup preparations under way as they lifted the Donegal Challenge Cup in Ballyare on Saturday.
This quadrangular tournament saw the hosts, along with East Donegal; Maiden City (Derry) and Carninny Youths from the Northern Ireland premier league compete in a round-robin tournament.
The hosts took to the field in the first game against their East Donegal counterparts, a game they won on a scoreline of 3-0.
The second game saw them take on Maiden City academy and again they came out on top on a scoreline of 5-1, with Jason McDaid helping himself to four goals.
This set up a winner takes all final game against the Ballymena lads, as they had also won their two respective games. The hosts aided by a stiff breeze got off to the perfect with two goals inside the first ten minutes form Conor Black. They stayed on top throughout the first half to lead 3-0 with the third coming from Stephen Black from a corner.
Carninny Youths to their credit never gave up and played some nice football in the second half. However, three further goals by Ciaran Moore, Jason McDaid and ‘Dixie’ Ferry saw the Donegal schoolboys prevail on a final scoreline of 5-1.
Overall, team manager Kevin McHugh can be reasonably happy with today’s showing but will know that much tougher tests lie ahead in the Foyle Cup in two weeks time.
