Herbie McDaid and Danny McDaid realise they’ve done it as the clock shows the four minute mile has been broken!

The delight on Danny McDaid’s face said it all.

Last year they came so close but today the elusive four minute mile was finally smashed for the first time in Co Donegal.

The winner of the mile race Barrios.

The winner of the mile race Barrios.

Not just one athlete but two runners, Juan Luis Barrios from Mexico and Vincent Mutai form Kenya, managed to get in under the four minute time at the Aura Leisure Centre for the event which was organised by Letterkenny Athletics Club.

Danny, who was swamped by family and friends, revealed “I am just so happy that we did it. There was a strong breeze today and it looked for a while as if it might not happen.

“But we managed to squeeze over the line to cap what was a wonderful day. It’s a great thing to achieve and I want to thank anybody who helped in any way to make today’s event happen.”

The four minute mile event was the last race of a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon in which various track records were smashed.

As well as the mile other local athletes including Mark English, Danny Mooney and Ruairi Finnegan were on display.
