A Donegal community is up in arms after visitors treated a local camping area like a dump site.

For many years a common area near Port Arthur Beach in Gaoth Dobhair has been used as an unofficial camping area.

People with caravans and campervans and tents have been using the commonage in the summer months.

However in recent weeks the area has suffered from illegal dumping with human waste and even portable toilets being dumped in a nearby quarry.

Now a meeting of local residents has been called for Tuesday next at 8pm at the Gweedore Utd FC Clubhouse.

Some fed-up locals are now calling for a ban on camping in the area because of the littering.

“This just can’t go on. The place has been left like a pig-sty.

“This is not an official camp site but a lot of people don’t mind it as long as it is kept clean.

“Something has to be done or we will have to stop the camping on it altogether,” said one annoyed local.
