GOLF LOGODunfanaghy Golf Club Notes:

We had another busy weekend in the club. Our 14 hole scrambles are going down well with everyone and there was another big attendance this Friday.

Our Captain Gerald was victorious with Maura Irwin, Carlos O Reilly and Finn Dalton. Our President, Brian was second with James Mc Cormack, Edward O Reilly and Michael Dolan. Thereare no more scrambles until after Open Week. Well done to Tony mc Gilloway on Sunday who had a fantastic score in the Centenary Cup.

Well done to the Ladies who defeated Rospapenna and qualified for the next round of the Maura O Donnell Cup. They will play Ballybofey or Greencastle in the next round.

Our open week begins on Wednesday. The weather forecast is good and the course has never been better. Make sure you try and play in as many competitions as you can during open week. Make sure to let your friends know about all the competitions. There is something to suit everyone. There are great prizes on offer on each day.

There will be presentations for each of the 18 hole Ladies Competitions on the 24th of July and the 29th of July at 9.30pm. There will be presentations for the other prizes on Sunday the 27th of July and Sunday the 3rd of August. I would ask that all prize winners for each of the competitions leading up to the presentation nights be in the clubhouse for 9.30pm on these presentation nights. There are no scrambles on Friday until after Open Week. The chef will be in the clubhouse on each day of Open week and the bar is also open each day.

We would like to thank all our sponsors of Open Week and would urge everyone to support our sponsors of Open week who are as follows:

Tennants Ireland, Frank and Nora Crumlish, Seamus mc Monagle (Club Professional), Roarty Development, The Oyster Bar, Mabel Gillespie and family, Eugene and Geraldine Magee, Starcrest Seafoods, Lynas Foods, Moores Garage, Arnolds Hotel, Sigma Wireless, Molly’s Bar, Patrick and Pauline Hunter.

Dunfanaghy Ladies;

The qualifier for the Lady Captain’s Shoot Out and the subsequent Shoot Out took place on Tuesday 15th July. Lady Captain Cheryl took the decision to play this competition ahead of Lady Captain’s week and was rewarded with an excellent turnout (42 players) and lovely playing conditions which resulted in very good scoring. The 18 hole competition was won by Karen McCormick (34) with 42 points while Sandra McGinley (25) came second with 38 points. Karena Brady (12) and Janice Doherty (34) won the first and second nine respectively with 20 points. Barbara Eakin and Rose Gavaghan had 2s. The 8 best nett scores and the 2 best gross scores were invited back in the evening to play in the shoot out. The contestants were: Natalie Cummings, Janice Doherty, Maggie Foy, Rose Gavaghan, Mabel Gillespie, Moira Irwin, Karen McCormick, Sandra McGinley, Deborah Moore and Margaret Witherow. The Shoot Out was competitive yet good natured and on the final tee box, Janice Doherty and Margaret Witherow were left to do battle down the 18th. Congratulations to Janice Doherty, who came out victorious, after a very tense final hole.

The Centenary Cup, sponsored by Barbara Eakin, was played on Saturday 19th July. Mary Lafferty (20) triumphed with a nett 67 and a better back nine from June Nelson (24). Mabel Gillespie (24) was third, with a nett 69, while Olivia Moore (13) won the gross with 81. Marsha McKendry (27) and Moira Irwin (17) won the first and second nine respectively with 32.5.

Lady Golfers are reminded that Open Week starts this Thursday 24th July with a stableford competition sponsored by Frank and Nora Crumlish. The Gillespie family have sponsored the second of the 18 hole stableford competitions on Tuesday 29th July. There are two 14 hole competitions on Saturday 26th July and Saturday 2nd August, teeing off from 4pm. The first of these competitions is sponsored by donations received by Dunfanaghy ladies branch, the second by member, Pauline Hunter. Thanks to all our sponsors. Tee times for all of these competitions can be booked through the shop (074-9136335. Lady Members are asked to check the notice board in the locker room for details of Lady Captain’s Day on 9th August and put their names up for the draw.

Dunfanaghy Juvenile Notes;

The course was full on Friday for the Annual Donegal boys competitions. It was great to see so many young golfers playing in the competition and some of them have the potential to be the next Rory Mc Elroy. Well done to Seamus Mc Monagle, our Club Professional for organising this event. The club also thanks Michael McGinley (Sigma Wireless) who kindly sponsored the running of the Donegal Boys competitions. Well done to Jack Patton from Letterkenny Golf club who was the winner. I have no doubt he has the potential to go on to even greater successes.
