ARE YOU UP FOR HAVING A ‘GRAND’ TIME WITH ANRAI CLIMBING ERRIGAL?

Hopefully many will conquer Errigal tomorrow!

Hopefully many will conquer Errigal tomorrow!

How often have you climbed Errigal? Once? Never? Perhaps half a dozen times?

Well now an invitation has gone out to join Carrickfin man Anraí O Domhnaill (Henry O’Donnell) as he summits tomorrow, 2nd August, at 1pm for his ONE THOUSANDTH time!

Anraí is also celebrating a great family event – his 50th birthday with all proceeds from the climb in aid of Donegal Mountain Rescue Team (DMRT).

The Team, who are very appreciative of Anrai’s efforts, are all unpaid volunteers on call to protect us in the hills 24/7, three hundred and sixty five days a year.

Anraí’s record breaking number of climbs on Errigal is more than impressive, beginning as he did at 6 years of age (December 1969) in the company of his father Peter and his brother Joe.

It set in motion a yearning that spurred a lifetime of adventures at home and abroad. His average number of climbs per year from 1969 –2014 is just over 22.

Anraí has many worldwide expeditions under his belt, such as a recent trip to South America taking in its highest point, Aconcagua at 22,837 feet, and its lowest point, Laguna del Carbón, 105 metres below sea level after a hazarduous crossing of the Patagonia Desert.

However, this surely is also a most remarkable feat, yet on our doorsteps and attainable to all.

To date €3000 has been pledged and all are welcome to come along to enjoy a great days craic on Errigal. A choice of easy, moderate and summit hikes will be available to suit all fitness levels.

The Mayor of Donegal, Cllr John Campbell is launching the event and indeed is up for the challenge of being the first First Citizen of the County to hike Errigal in the chain of office.

Also present will be the King of Tory and though some twenty years Anraí’s senior he suggests that there will be a tussle between Mayor & King as to whom will claim Errigal’s crown first tomorrow!

Live trad music, craic, guest speakers and a colour certificate to every participant. There may even be a gathering of beautiful young Mary ladies from Dungloe but what will they do with the stilettos……!

Starts at 1pm SHARP but be there from 12 noon to sign in.
