Inishowen Motors OpenLetterkenny Golf News:

Friday 1st August Open Stroke was won by welcome visitor Rod Geddes [11] with a gross 82, scored in blustery winds and heavy showers.

Sat.2nd Open, sponsored by Highland Radio, saw an entry of over one hundred competitors, with one of the club’s most improved members in recent years, P.J.Nee [15] taking top step on the podium.

Despite recording a blank at par three 5th hole, P.J. Kept it together for a 20pt. front nine and covered the inward nine with 22pts for a 42pt. finish.

In second place was Keith Shields [9] who, with a birdie at par five 2nd, managed the back nine in 37 gross shots, 21pts., for a finishing score of 40pts. In third place with a return to form was single figure handicapper Martin A. Gallagher [6], winning on a six-way B.O.T. with 38pts from J.P. Clarke [12]. Cat 4 prizewinner was Liam Moriarty [28] with 37pts and best visitor was Eugene Griffin [18] with 38pts.

Sunday 3rd Confined competition, played in very heavy showers and cold breeze, was won by Brian Cullen [11] who, with the help of a birdie at 7th, returned 22pts on front nine and finished with an overall 41pts. Cat 4 handicapper Kieran Shields [22] was second on B.O.T. with 39pts by virtue of a birdie at 5th and 22pts on front nine, with Paddy O’Gorman [19] once again engineering a winning score which included a birdie at 7th and 23pts on outward nine.

Bank Holiday Monday 4th had Letterkenny Golf Club hosting the annual Friends of St. Luke’s Hospital Charity Open, organized by Mick Gallagher. With another entry of over one hundred competitors, it was the host club’s competition stalwart Vincent Bianconi [19], who spreadeagled the field with a fantastic 45pts. Making a perfect start with a birdie at first, Vincent set the standard with an outward nine of 24pts, making the back nine look like an easy finish. In runner-up spot was ex club President Eamon O’ Carroll [15] with 42pts and just one point behind in third was regular visitor Eugene Gallagher [17] who, despite a brace of double bogeys at 8th and 9th, managed 23pts on back nine for a return of 41pts.

Diary Dates: Saturday 9th competition will see the annual Auto Fast Fit & Tyre Centre sponsored Open, while Sunday 10th will host the Lady Captain’s Prize to Gents [members only]. Wednesday 13th Open is sponsored by David Johnson and Saturday 16th is Lady Captain’s Day. All male members would like to wish Lady Captain, Catherine Cooke-Harkin, every success on Saturday 16th.
